Since the Bitcoin heat has been sweeping the world after Trump's victory in the United States Presidential Election, this digital currency has now become the talk of the town.
Imagine, who would have thought that Bitcoin, which was first introduced as a 'virtual currency', now has the potential to change the world's financial landscape and perhaps even a person's personal life?
In an interesting case that stole attention in Malaysia, a wedding debt claim involves Bitcoin.
Not ordinary cash, not even a blank check but this one cryptocurrency - Bitcoin!
According to a share from the social media site X by the Adam Mashrique account, an interesting case that occurred in 2019 involving a wedding debt claim using Bitcoin between an ex-husband and wife has recently gained attention in Malaysia.
In the accompanying case report, Rosmaliza binti Mohamad Rosli filed a claim at the Selangor Syariah Court on 10 September 2019 against her ex-husband, Mohd Nahar bin Mohd Nasir to return Bitcoin which is said to be part of their marital assets of 206.9967889 Bitcoin.
At the current rate at the time, it was worth around RM10 million.
But with Bitcoin’s price “to the moon” now, the amount has reached over RM85 million!
It’s no wonder that this claim went viral because it’s not just an ordinary domestic drama.
However, the court dismissed the plaintiff’s claim, as well as the defendant’s counterclaim and struck out the suit.
This decision was reached after the court considered several important factors, including Islamic law relating to Bitcoin in Malaysia and the legal position of Bitcoin in a religious context.
The court emphasized that, although transactions using Bitcoin are permitted in certain situations according to Islamic law, the plaintiff failed to prove that the Bitcoin account claimed met the criteria set by the Selangor State Fatwa Committee.
Interestingly, this story reminds us that Bitcoin is not just an ordinary digital currency.
From the blockchain world to the courtroom, Bitcoin continues to make history.
